While perusing my friend Gaurav Sethi's blog, I came across this list. I wanted to save it so that in the back of my mind I could always try to work towards reading the novels present on the list. I have also bolded the novels that I have already read.
I hate that so many of these are actually excellent novels that helped shape my childhood, yet people are fighting their distribution just because of the sensitive issues they may present. I remember reading every one of the novels that I bolded below the cut, and I have a fond memory of each. I cannot understand why the issues presented in these novels would be unsatisfactory for young readers, but I guess I don't know much about literature * looks forlornly at the B.A English Language and Literature degree sitting against the wall, gathering dust *
I find this especially appalling because of the content on television and in movies for 2010. Things that I would have never been able to watch are typical for the average 13 year old, yet these novels are presented as threatening. I really just don't understand the world anymore, and it is even more difficult knowing that I am not actually that old. I worry about how much things are going to change in five years - ten years - twenty years, with the rate they are changing now. Censorship got confused somewhere along the way.
